Our team:
The Building Engineering Trades are an integral part of maintaining and improving the core systems of the architectural structures on campus. The HVAC shops provide a range of services to academic, research, library and special University facilities which include the following: 24 Hour Emergency Response Routine Maintenance New System Design & Installation Repairs & Alterations to Existing Systems
Responsible for operation, replacement, repair and maintenance of building related mechanical, electrical, control systems, plumbing, air handling units, pumps, heat exchangers, expansion joints, and other building mechanical systems. Work involves the lifting of heavy mechanical equipment and apparatus and may be performed in areas of extreme heat or cold. Receives and responds to service calls, takes immediate action to resolve emergency situations or system breakdowns.
Job responsibilities & Duties**
Under the direction of a lead or supervisor, employees in this classification, HVAC Mechanics perform skilled heating, ventilating, and air
Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair all types of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment.
Work in a wide variety of environments, such as office, library, food preparation and storage, research, shops, and laboratories.
Perform electrical work (through 480V) as required for maintaining and repairing HVAC systems. Work includes replacing fuses, motors, transformers, wiring, contactors, controls, and disconnect switches, etc.
Assist in installation, maintenance and modification of complex instrumentation and controls for HVAC systems; work independently to adjust, replace and maintain standard controls
Do routine troubleshooting of various heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems; repair and restore them to proper operational service
Install, inspect, repair, maintain, and modify various heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in office buildings, auditoriums, residential buildings, and research facilities.
Connect and disconnect pipelines and fittings and perform plumbing work pertaining to HVAC (such as cutting, soldering, brazing, connecting and disconnecting pipelines, and replacing fittings and valves) Perform preventative and predictive maintenance services as directed by Supervisor or Lead Mechanic.
Installs, maintains, and repairs chilled water systems, air conditioning, hydronic boilers and refrigeration systems.
Installs, modifies and repairs related control systems, including pneumatic DDC and other building control systems equipment.
Performs repair and installation tasks involving assembly, testing, calibrating and adjusting of packaged units, split units, air distribution systems and dehumidification systems.
May perform complex repairs of system components such as compressors, condensers, heat pump regulators, fluid and refrigeration gas line valves, meters, gauges, thermostats, pumps, mechanical linkage, electrical sensing, switching and controlling
devices including pneumatic controls, variable speed drives, digital controlled devices, electronic, hydraulic heating and cooling and economizer systems.
Review rounds and reading logs for all critical HVAC systems to ensure all systems are operating properly.
Maintain records and assist in procurement of components and spare parts.
The schedule for the role is Monday through Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm

Qualifications:
Experience & proven ability to repair building electrical, plumbing, & HVAC auxiliary systems.
Experience & proven ability to safely secure hydronic and electrical systems for maintenance.
Experience & proven ability to Braze/Solder copper pie, thread black pipe.
Basic carpentry skills.
Strong knowledge of operation of building auxiliary systems i.e. fire-life safety, stand by emergency generators, UPS Systems.
Familiarity of general building systems i.e. vertical lift equipment, overhead doors.
Ability to write, execute written and oral instructions and perform arithmetic calculations.
Strong knowledge of safe work practices and procedures typical for maintenance operations.
Ability to safely wear a respirator, climb ladders, enter confined spaces, lift heavy objects and perform other physically demanding tasks Safely and skillfully use all types of related hand and power tools.
Minimum Education and Experience Required
Journey level knowledge equivalent to four years completion in an apprentice program as a journey mechanic, with a minimum of four years' actual work experience in the trade or a combination of equivalent education and work experience.
Certificates and Licenses Required
Must possess and maintain a valid California non-commercial Class C Driver's License.
Must have current EPA Certification and/or Universal Technician Certification.

May be exposed to high voltage (600V) electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise > 80dB, confined spaces, working at heights of over 10 feet, hot and cold temperature extremes, heavy metals, exposure to 200 PSI
Required to wear appropriate uniform and appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
May be required to work overtime, evenings and weekends, including holidays, sometimes in inclement weather conditions.
Ability to drive day or night.

The expected pay range for this position is $52.21 (Step 1) to $63.15 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
