This is a full-time hourly position covered by our AFSCME union contract. OBJECTIVE/PURPOSE: Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Parks, Trails & Open Spaces, and the general oversight of any Parks and Maintenance Tech Level II, the Park Maintenance Technician works to effectively operate safe, aesthetically pleasing, and functional grounds and facilities for the public to enjoy, in support of the development, maintenance, and stewardship of a comprehensive system of leisure and recreational services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following is a list of the more common duties and responsibilities for this position. This list is not all-inclusive and may be amended from time to time as circumstances may dictate.
Grounds and Landscaping Maintenance: -Waste and recycling management -Mowing, trimming and edging lawns -Tree care and maintenance -Maintain natural areas, trails and conservation spaces
Facility and Infrastructure Maintenance: -Cleaning and maintaining playgrounds, shelters, restrooms, and benches -Basic carpentry, plumbing and painting -Fence, bench and signage repair -Trail and path maintenance
Equipment Operation and Maintenance: -Operate mowers, tractors, chainsaws, grass trimmers, snowplows, etc. -Perform routine maintenance (oil, blades, and filters) -Report and troubleshoot equipment issues -Ensure safe use and storage of tools
Seasonal Operations: -Set up/take down for events, camps and programs -Snow removal -Spring/fall park setup and winterization -Assist with pool needs and maintenance -Leaf clean-up -Ice rink management
Safety, Compliance and Risk Management: -Follow OSHA and municipal safety standards -Inspect parks and equipment for safety hazards and report or correct issues Customer Service and Public Interaction: -Interact with park users in a professional manner -Respond to public concerns or complaints appropriately or communicate with the appropriate party -Represent the department positively
Administrative and Team Responsibilities: -Complete work orders and logs -Complete vehicle and equipment safety checks -Communicate with supervisors and team members -Coordinate with recreation staff as needed -Participate in training and certifications -Aid with inventory and supply tracking
Performs work that requires moderate physical effort; work is performed under varying weather conditions, with exposure to hazards associated with traffic, equipment operation, turf maintenance materials, and construction activities.
Responds on a 24-hour basis to emergencies when contacted.
Performs additional duties as required or assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: -Basic knowledge of the materials, methods, and techniques of basic maintenance projects. -Ability to perform strenuous duties under varying weather conditions for long hours. -Ability to upgrade skills through continuing education. -Proficient computer skills, ability to use computer for basic duties such as work order system and email. -Ability to interact personally and professionally with coworkers, members of the public, and other local and State entities in a professional and courteous manner always. -Must possess good technical skills in the safe operation of tools, construction and maintenance equipment, tractors, lawn mowers, and other heavy equipment. -Working knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions. -Must be able to accept constructive criticism and have the ability to communicate and work well with others.
Education and Experience: The list below of qualifications and experience is desired, unless otherwise specified, for this position. Essex will consider any combination of education and experience that allows for successful performance in this role. There will be in some instances licensures or other requirements that are legally required. -A valid driver’s license, or ability to obtain it within the first year of employment. -High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) -Minimum of two years of relevant training/experience -Certifications and skills desired but not required: -Pesticide Applicator’s License -Certified Pool Operator -Certified Playground Safety Inspector -Game of Logging chainsaw class 1 -Experience driving a snowplow -Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
